Making candles is an art form like many others, but where it truly shines is that you get to actually use what you created in a meaningful way. It’s not like a chair or a table, because those can be reused many times in the years to come, whereas a candle, is something special because it has a short lifespan. As we learn to enjoy the little pleasures in life, an aroma therapy candle always leaves a good memory. Therefore, here’s a DIY complete guide on how to make aromatherapy candles at home.
An Introduction to the Aromatherapy Candle?
What defines an aromatherapy candle is the essential oils that the latter contains. When those are slowly burning, it is claimed that the scent will help you gain focus and relieve stress from your body. Depending on which essential oils are used to make the candle, as well as the crafting process itself, an aromatherapy candle will have different effects on the person who uses it.
Why are aromatherapy candles better than your typical candle?
First, it is worth noting that most cheap candles you buy in $1 stores and whatnot are made with artificial and synthetic ingredients. On the other hand, when it comes to aromatherapy candles, most of them are pricier because they are handmade with natural ingredients and high-quality essential oils.
Moreover, breathing air in a room full of artificial candles is not good for your health, as those are basically made of cheap synthetic materials that are being burnt very slowly.
What are the benefits of aromatherapy candles?
Now, you may be wondering what the big fuss is about and why so many people buy pricey candles. Is it just for their good smell or there is more to it than that? Here’s a rundown of the main benefits that come with aromatherapy candles:
- Help with the stress and anxiety
If you’re feeling down or that you’re having some anxiety episodes, then a cute aromatherapy candle with a hot chocolate and a good book might be all you need! Seriously, many people claimed that lighting up a nice candle in their living room or bedroom made a whole lot of difference in their lives. Who knows, it’s worth a shot no?

- A nice ambiance for reading a book
As mentioned before, an aromatherapy candle not only helps with the stress but will also help you focus on something. Nowadays, we have access to so many Tiktoks and Instagrams, and Youtube, but, nothing beats a good book in a room that smells wonderful!
- Can improve your mood
After lighting up a candle that actually took time to make, or that costs you more than just a few cents, it always feels like an event. It doesn’t matter whether the event is small or big, what counts is that you are taking the time to do something different. That’s all that matters, after all, doesn’t it?
- A romantic ambiance for someone special
And finally, if you want to impress someone special, then try to light up a few aromatherapy candles in the room (be careful though). A little moment in private together, with the ambiance of the candles slowly burning around you, will for sure have its effects.
As mentioned above, please, be careful when you use 1 or more candles in your home. Despite their benefits and amazing scents, they are still sources of fire hazards, so be mindful when you light them up.
DIY: Make your own therapeutic candle at home!
A lot of people think that making candles is some kind of witchcraft, but in reality, it’s fairly simple. Here’s our step-by-step guide to making homemade aromatherapeutic candles:
- First, in a pot, you will melt a good quantity of soy wax over low-medium heat.
- Next, once everything melted properly, you will add between 80 and 110 drops of an essential oil of your choice. Here you can also mix different essential oils, some mixes are better than others, have fun experimenting!
- Thereafter, you will need a mason jar or something similar. Then, slowly, you will anchor wicks to the bottom of the jar. You can use wax to do it.
- Put a horizontal chopstick on the pot and tape the wick to the chopstick. The goal here is to keep the wick in the middle of the pot.
- Now, once you think your mixture is ready and that the wick in your pot is pretty close to the center, you will pour the liquid wax into your mason jar until it’s almost full.
- Finally, you can remove the chopstick and the tape once the wax is getting hard.
That’s pretty much it! Now you’re ready to test your candle out and see for yourself if it’s working properly. Don’t worry if your first candle doesn’t work, it takes a bit of practice before getting used to making candles.
Is weed good for making aromatherapy candles?
Also called CBD candles, they are getting more and more popular especially now that weed is becoming legal everywhere on the planet. However, CBD, which stands for cannabidiol, doesn’t make you high and has always been legal in most countries. It still offers a number of interesting properties when burnt, thus why many aromatherapy makers use CBD oil for their candles. Those smells amazing and are claimed to be very relaxing.
